Seattle/Shoreline Hypnotherapy, NLP: The Treatment of Phobias with Hypnosis and NLP

If  you live in the Seattle/Shoreline area and are suffering from a debilitating phobia, there is a good chance that I can help you be free of this once and for all by using hypnosis and/or NLP. Studies have shown that hypnosis and NLP are effective methods in the treatment of phobias.

What is a Phobia?                                  images

Phobia comes from the Greek word “phobos,” meaning fear. It is usually classified as a type of anxiety disorder, usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation that a person goes to great lengths in avoiding, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational. In the event the phobia cannot be avoided entirely, the sufferer will endure the situation or object with marked distress and significant interference in social or occupational activities.

Some Common Phobias:

  • Acrophobia – abnormal fear of heights
  • Agoraphobia – abnormal fear of leaving ones dwelling or home
  • Hemophobia – abnormal fear of bloodXenophobia  – abnormal fear of stranger
  • Arachnophobia – abnormal fear of spiders and insects
  • Suriphobia – abnormal fear of mice
  • Claustrophobia – abnormal fear of enclosed spaces. note: Acrophobia and Claustrophobia are often seen in fear of flying. What causes Phobias?
  • External Factors – Many behavior experts in phobia treatment find that phobias can develop partially by external events that are interpreted by someone in a certain way, such as trauma in early childhood, often between the ages of four and eight. This is often a very common beginning to a lifetime of phobia.
  • Traumatic event as an adolescent or adult… A phobia linked to a single significant event such as a fear of flying after a loved one perished in a small plane crash, or almost being bitten by a snake…

  • Internal Factors –  When an external event meets with a person exhibiting certain genetic and hereditary characteristics, it is possible to develop phobia. People prone to anxiety, fear or who are startled easily are most at risk. Personality, coping mechanisms developed over time and life experiences all factor into the trigger and development of phobias.

Biology of Fear

Fear creates a certain set of responses in the  body, such as rapid breathing, heart rate, sweating and vasal constriction. The brain triggers the body to prepare for danger and the physical reaction is a fight or flight response.  When the situation is not a true threat, a non-phobic person will not experience the symptoms of panic, while a phobic person will.

When a  panic attack is triggered, an area of the brain called the amygdala, puts out hormones that control fear and floods the body with these hormones that increase the alert state.

In my next post, see how hypnosis and NLP can eliminate fear and anxiety and restore confidence and emotional integrity to your life!
