Seattle/Shoreline, Acupuncture and Moxibustion: Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome/Tendonitis

carpal-tunnel-syndrome-maryland-1If you live in the Seattle/Shoreline area and are suffering with wrist/arm pain, there is an excellent chance that  you can get relief with  Acupuncture and Moxibustion in the Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome/Tendonitis.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is defined as a repetitive stress injury characterized by entrapment, compression or irritation to the median nerve in its narrow passageway of the carpal tunnel of the wrist. It is classified as a repetitive stress injury. Often, musicians, factory workers, carpenters, massage therapists can experience CTS. And while gross repetitive movement does cause issues,  People with less traumatic vocations can experience  this micro-trauma injury as well. Due to hormonal changes and changes in fluid retention,  pregnancy and menopause can also cause this, possibly due to the changes and functions of ligaments (nourished by the Liver blood).

Symptoms:

Symptoms are usually of gradual onset, and patients report pain coming and going, being worse at night and are generally stiff and sore in the morning.Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Chart

  • Pain, numbness, tingling and the feeling of “pins and needles” in the palmar aspect of wrist and hand.
  • Pain can be constant
  • pain can radiate from hand, wrist, forearm, all the way to the shoulder girdle
  • quality of the pain can range from a dull ache to sharp, stabbing and focal.
  • Patient can also complain of weakness and being unable to grasp objects as well.

Treatment:

Generally first line of treatment options include NSAIDs (advil, tylenol, etc), rest, icing and splinting to keep the wrist in a neutral position. Often a wrist brace is worn at night. Depending on the severity and how chronic the condition has become, if all other treatments have failed, surgery is often prescribed as a way to widen  and open the carpal tunnel. This can take care of the issue completely for some people. However, it can and often makes the wrist inflamed again over time, with all of the same symptoms presenting and causing discomfort. Many have reported that the symptoms are often worse after the surgery.

Acupuncture and Moxibustion:

Acupuncture has been proven and is recognized as one of the best alternative modalities in treating CTS safely and effectively. Due to acupuncture’s effect on increasing circulation of blood, qi, and fluids, plus the effect on the neurotransmitters for pain (endorphins), allows the body to restore the free flow of fluids and neuro-responses to the area. And while the treatment does revolve around treating the symptoms, the symptoms are used as a “guide-post” to take us to the root of the problem. This could be Qi/Blood Deficiency, Liver Blood Deficiency or Excess fluid retention.

Diagnosis:

Not all wrist pain or numbness in the hand is due to CTS and is quite often simple tendonitis. Also, one has to rule out any compression of nerves or blood vessels in the neck (cervical vertebrae) and the shoulder girdler (brachial plexus). There is a manual orthopedic test that can be done to help access if this is “true” CTS or not.
